Ernest Cousins Limited - A Brief History

Ernest Cousins founded his dairy business in 1889 at the age of 24, going door to door selling milk from a two wheeled cart. Lovell's of Montreal lists Ernest's occupation in 1892 as a milkman and later a dairyman. As an recognized dairyman in the community his routes flourished. The Imperial Ice Cream Shop opens up in 1907 and one year later Ernest becomes one of the shop's managers. In 1909, the combination of both an ever expanding series of milk routes and the success of the ice cream shop, allows him to open a small dairy of his own two doors down. Spring 1909, "Ernest Cousins - Zouave Dairy" opens up at 31 Montee du Zouave. Montee du Zouave was located on a side street east on St. Denis at Sherbrooke. Today the street is named Terrace St. Denis. Along with the Imperial Ice Cream Shop, Ernest would acquire Wildgrove Limited, a company which sold butter and eggs (located on Colborne Ave), as well as several other small shops all in the downtown core.

The business would grow and by 1928 a new, much larger permanent home for the dairy would be built at the site of 175 Colborne Ave. One year later the dairy changes it's name from Ernest Cousin's - Zouave Dairy to simply Ernest Cousins Limited. The dairy would continue to expand under the Blue Crest Dairy label. Shoppes and ice cream parlors opened all over Montreal and the surrounding area selling butter, eggs, cheese, ice cream, buttermilk and related items. The family business would continue to operate until 1961. At this point, with the retirement of Ernest Sr. at the age of 96, and the need to up grade plant equipment the dairy was sold and moved to Bordens Co. Ltd at 3115 Cote de Liesse. Three years later Ernest Sr. died February 19th 1964 in his home at the age of 98.

Milk Caps

There are many different milk caps with all sorts of variations. The way I date these caps is by comparing listings of Ernest Cousins Limited in the Bell City Directory of Montreal to the phone numbers printed on each cap. I am currently going through the directories right now.

The red and blue cap " Ernest Cousins - 175 Windsor" "HOMOGENIZED MILK" is a 38mm cap belonging to the large gallon below. This cap dates to 1961.

Bottles Used at the Dairy

In my search for milk bottles I have so far come across nine variations of bottles used at the dairy. There are possibly more just waiting to be discovered. One in particular that I am hoping to find is a bottle that reads " Zouave Dairy ". Now I have never been able to confirm if a bottle exists with the name " Zouave Dairy " on it, but I suspect there might be one. If anyone actually has or has seen a bottle could they let me know. The bottles shown are in possible chronological order from oldest to newest. Sometimes there are dates embossed on the bottles while the age of others is determined by patterns and other markings. All Ernest Cousins Bottles other than the square bottles that I have ever come upon are embossed and have this logo embossed on the front: "Ernest Cousins Limited Montreal". There are milk bottles with "Cousins Dairy" embossed on them but those are from various dairy's in the Toronto area with the same name. These dairies are NOT related in any way to Ernest Cousins Limited in Montreal. Everything that I know that has ever come from the dairy whether it be letterhead, milk caps, signs, milk crates etc., always has "Ernest Cousins Limited Montreal" included with it. The only exception would be the square milk bottles which were sold by case to restaurants where the only identifying feature would have been the milk cap. Therefore bottles missing the words "Ernest" and/or "Montreal" are not from this dairy.

I believe that this set of bottles is the oldest out of known Ernest Cousins bottles. This set I am missing the pint.

This set of bottles I am missing the Quart and Pint

This set of bottles I am missing the 1/2 pint

This set of bottles is interesting. I am not sure where it dates but I have yet to see if in fact a quart and pint exist.

These are pretty hard to come buy. "Loaned Deposit" is embossed on them. Guess everyone wanted there nickel back!

This set of bottles does not include the embossed "Blue Crest Dairy Products" label which is found on the the set following. I am missing the 1/2 pint.

These are the most common series of bottles availible. This is due in part to the number of years the bottles were availible. On the base of each is stamped the production date. I have bottles which range from 1938 to 1942. I have one which I believe is from 1958 but the date is blurred.
